I have up to now been working for the same client practically full time for almost 3 years. I have had assignments with other clients and I have even had extra freelancers helping me out from time to time, due to a heavy workload.
Two weeks ago my client announced that all development will be outsourced to an external company.
After a few meeting, with heavy focus on the regular employees (which is completely okay with), I had a long talk with my long time friend and colleague and I decided to inform the client that I did not intend to move along.
I have for a long time worked on changing my relationship with the client from a consultancy/body-shopping gig to becoming a proper sub-contractor and this was close to succeeding.
So from this perspective I actually perceive the outsourcing company as a competitor. At the same time I have informed my client that can continue as a subcontractor to the outsourcing company, but I need to see something concrete instead of just moving along with all of the other developers and consultants.
So as it looks right now I am without assignments from the first of March, but lets see what happens, I am open to a lot of things and at the same time I am exploring the idea of expanding my business area into some application development I have not done before.
I have never had a signed contract with this client and this might seem a bit crazy, but now it puts me in a situation where I do not have to suffer under other peoples crazy ideas and weird decisions I can just terminate my work and be on my way.
Being a freelancer really suits me well.
